Sumner – “War and other Essays”

Here I make the book “War and other Essays” from William Graham Sumner, available as one pdf-file per essay. The objective  is to make it easier  to read them on a smartphone or tablet.I have tried to process  the  pdf-Versions of the following  projects:

https://archive.org/details/warandotheressa00kellgoog

http://oll.libertyfund.org/titles/sumner-war-and-other-essays

The facsimile -pdf version of oll.libertyfund.org has by far the best quality (as of May 10th, 2016).  Probably they had a better printed copy. Because even this produced  many   recognition  errors,  I first checked the introduction and the first essay  manually, using FineReaders check-function.   The  small  pdf-text  files  resulted  from this effort.    Then I played more with FineReaders pdf-export options and found that   a resolution with 150dpi , a  reduction  of the color to black and wite, and ‘original picture over text’ resulted in the best compromise of file size, readability , ease of use and reliability on my smart phone.  If I would like to print out one or more of the essays I would use the pdf-files from archive.org or oll.libertyfund.org, which seem to have a resolution of 300 dpi.

The Numbers and Names of the chapters as well as the page numbers are taken from the table of contents of the original  book.

Sumner – “Earth Hunger and other Essays”

This is to make available William Graham Sumner’s, book Earth-Hunger and other  Essays      as  compact pdf-files. The target was to simplify  printing off the essays and other parts of the book or to read them  on a smart phone.

Description of my technical processing:

I took the  pdf-version  from  https://archive.org/details/earthhungerother00sumniala

and  processed it with    the OCR-programm FineReader 12 Professional .  The parts of the book ware saved als pdf-files with a resolution of 150 dpi and without the original picture.

I made only minor corrections. For example the Umlaut  ü in  “menschenwürdiges” or “menschwürdig” in  An Examination of a Noble Sentiment was not correctly recognized by FineReader, since the document language to be used was English.    The French word sensibilité too was incorrectly recognized in the same essay.

If you find any more errors, please let me know by the  comment function.
